A Funny Moment brought to you by Truely

clock June 27, 2008 11:47 by author jaret

Last Saturday, Talk English hosted a Large Event at Zhongshan Park.  It was filled with many funny moments, but many of them not captured for all to revisit from time to time.  With that being said, I found myself victim to one of the many pranks that day and I thought it was only natural to share with all of you.  Enjoy!

Take notice of Truely in the background and his co-conspirator, Garrik!

Revenge is mine!!!!!!!!!!

A conversation with our Talk English Mini-Activity correspondent, Hsilgne Klat and Tom Male

clock June 27, 2008 08:03 by author jaret

Who are you?

Hello Y’all!  My name is Tom Male and I’m from Georgia, U.S.A.

Where did you come from and what brings you to Shanghai?

I came to Shanghai in February of this year with the intent to explore the culture and do some teaching.  I have really enjoyed Shanghai and all that it has to offer.  It is a marvelous city with the beginnings of what appears to be the “new” New York City.  And, I should know, as I spent many years in New York City.

How did you come across Talk English?

Well, in my quest to find employment in Shanghai, I was lucky to have found Talk English.  I happen to know someone very close to the company, but I won’t name names.   I would also like to say that I am very grateful for the opportunity to work in such a positive environment.  The members at Talk English have been a pleasant surprise.  I never imagined how enjoyable it could be to teach in an environment where students have so much passion and motivation to learn English and expand their knowledge.  It is certainly encouraging for me as a teacher!

What did you think it was going to be like in China?

To be honest, I have traveled the world, so I knew better than to listen to the established propaganda rhetoric that so many people fall prey to; however, I had some impressions of China that haven’t quite been accurate.  But, I will say that Shanghai is quite different from other parts of China, so maybe those impressions I had in the past may emerge when I get to explore more parts of China.

What impresses you most about Shanghai?

The people, the energy and the constant state of change!

So, you enjoy the constant noise of construction?

I wouldn’t go that far, but it is amazing to virtually see drastic change in such a short time.  Of course, with the massive labor pool, pop-up buildings are easy to accomplish.

51st Date with the Humpback Whale--和驼背鲸约会吧

clock June 27, 2008 07:45 by author jaret

Talk Study Abroad brings you 14 days of surfing + a special English course for the week in Australia!

本周拓客游学特别推荐14日澳大利亚冲浪+英文课程!

As it says above, the course is about learning how to surf and improving your English in Australia for 14 days.

正如课程名称所说,你可以通过这个14日的课程在澳大利亚拜伦湾提高英语并且学习如何冲浪。

And the coolest part is that you will have the chance to witness the migratory movement of humpback whales between eastern Australia and the Balleny Islands, Antarctica. Every year during July to September, humpback whales will move slowly towards eastern Australia, which makes Byron Bay area the best viewing platform. Apart from meeting large groups of surfers, you might also be able to meet some world celebrities during your time. You never know…

最棒的一点是你有机会目睹驼背鲸在澳州东部和南极洲间的迁移景观。每年7月到9月间,驼背鲸会慢慢的向澳大利亚东部靠近,拜伦海湾就成了观赏驼背鲸迁移的绝佳自然看台。在此之间,你除了会碰到不少冲浪爱好者,也可能有机会和世界级明星碰面哦!

The 14-day-program costs about 20,700 RMB (including tuition fees, surfing equipment rental fee, accommodation, round-trip air fare, insurance and visa application fees. This price will fluctuate slightly according to the exchange rate and air tickets seasonal change in price.)

这个14天的课程总价约为20700人民币(包括学费,冲浪器具费,住宿费,往返机票,保险和签证费用,具体准确价格要按报名时间的汇率和机票价格而定)

Students study English part-time and join a 2 week surf course for 4 afternoons (2 hours) per week. The professional surfing school will provide surfboard/body-board, wetsuit, rash vest, sunscreen and transportation. It’s great fun and very safe! For more information please contact our Talk Study Abroad department at 021 3360 8999 Ext. 152. By the way, apart from surfing you can also choose to do some diving, learn about Australian music or just go sightseeing.

学生们会参加非全日制英文课程同时参加2周的学习冲浪课程(每周四个下午,每节课2个小时)。会有专业的冲浪学校提供冲浪板,保温潜水服,防疹背心,遮光剂和交通运输。整个经历会非常有趣非常安全!更多详情请直接联系我们拓客游学部门021 3360 8999 * 152。哦,对了出了冲浪,你还可以选择参加潜水,音乐或陆地上的观光。

English Carnival

clock June 26, 2008 10:13 by author clemon

Fifty fearless members braved the rain and wet dirt--also called mud--to attend Talk English's first English Carnival. At the carnival--strangely devoid of any ferris wheels and cotton candy--members were encouraged to bond with their teams, work together to solve physically challenging problems, and reflect on what happens to their stomachs after eating mayo that's been in the sun for about 2 hours. Click here for all the Carnival pics!!!

Jane doesn't quite know how to get the Hula Pass started!!!

Garrick and Emily have the right idea.

Either Jesse's team is doing a Trust Fall or starting a Russian Crip Walking Team!

Evan plotting a trap Daffy Duck style.

This old man's got MOVES!!!

It's good to have goals, Tony Lee. It's good to have goals.

Tom gets possessive when members try to take his favorite blanket!!!

"Wait...which foot is left again???"

Members line up to hit George Bush in the face. Hey...wouldn't you?

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! English ROCKS!!!!

Pronouncing Longer Words

clock June 25, 2008 20:50 by author mark

At first, longer English words may appear difficult to pronounce, but they’re actually easy to learn to say, if you use this approach:

Find someone to help you say the complete word correctly.  Break the word into pieces, then starting from back to front, pronounce it by adding one piece each time until you’ve said the entire word.  Each piece is called a “syllable”, like a beat in music, and one syllable will have the strongest emphasis (ask a native English speaker to tell you which one).

Here’s an example.

enthusiastic (“having great excitement for or interest in a subject or cause”);

five beats or syllables = en thu si A stic;

“A” is the strongest beat when pronouncing enthusiastic … so now let’s try:

1.  start with “stic” (“stic” like in “chopSTICK”)

2.  then “A stic” (“A” like in “Apple”, saying A strongest)

3.  “si A stic” (“si” like saying the letter “Z”)

4.  “thu si A stic” (“u” like in “sOOn”)

5.  “en thu si A stic” (“en” like in “ENter”)

… repeat each string of syllables 3 times.

Try this with other longer words of your choice.  Once you get familiar with this technique, you won’t be afraid to add any

English word to your speaking vocabulary.  The method was taught to me during TESOL certification (Teaching English to

Speakers of Other Languages) in San Francisco California, and I’m sharing it with a wish for you to become comfortable

and enthusiastic to say many new words!

Best, Mark
