NICE EXPERIENCES IN TDT
Up to now, I have attended TDT for exactly 4 weeks. At the very beginning, I wondered whether TDT was suitable
for me. My English was on an embarrassing stage. Because my job is about export business, I have to talk with
foreigners sometimes. However, I always find I can’t express myself well, and can’t express myself in perfect
and fluent English. I’v attended a few English classes several years ago, but they didn’t help me much. Kyle,
my education consultant, told me that TDT was different from the traditional English classes, and I could pick
up my English here in a relaxed way. With a suspicious attitude, I attended TDT. Finally I found he didn’t lie
to me. It is not only relaxed, but efficient.
I joined many activities at first, such as having Japanese food, pumpkin carving, seeing a horror film, etc.
Here I met crews who are from America and speak native American English. They could easily find our mistakes when
we spoke Chinglish.  They corrected us immediately. And they are always very kind and patient. Besides new words
and phrases, we also learned about American culture from them. While learning English here, I also have a lot of
fun. The most impressive activity was the Halloween party on Nov. 1st. Over one hundred people attended it,
everyone was wearing special clothes or masks. Several guys were even wrapped into a mummy using toilet paper.
What a creative idea it was! It was  new experience for me, and I had an exciting night. Before attending TDT, I
was a homebody, only leaving home to go to work.  My friends are limited, either classmates or colleagues. During
my spare time, I used to stay at home. After attending TDT, I find it is also a good place to meet new friends
from many fields I’v never met before. TDT is like “a big family”. Everyone here treated me very kindly,
especially Libby, my study consultant.  She has a nice voice ( I haven’t met her, just keeping in touch with her
in telephone), and she has helped me a lot.  She pushes me  to succeed.
I like TDT, and I think I will get what I want here.

Maggle M001719~

A message from our member Vincent

clock August 13, 2008 11:34 by author gordon

Vincent ~M001349

很高兴等级得到了提升,三个多月的努力得到了肯定很欣慰。其实回头想想也很困惑,说不出具体到底收获了什么实实在在的东西。不过这就是学习语言,感觉不到实再的东西,但却又是实实在在的进步。也许只是对一些词似曾相识,或者是好像在哪听过这句话,又或者终于听懂了那首最喜爱的歌的到底是什么意思,这都说明你在进步。

I am very happy to level up.  After more than three months of hard work, it has definately been worth the effort.  Looking back at my experience, it was also a bit strange because I really couldn't say I actually felt I learned anything specifically. However this is about learning a language and it's hard to describe exactly what happened and when this "change" actually took place and I actually improved.  All of this happened gradually, bit by bit, when I'd learn and use a few words here and there.  Then I'd hear the same words being used again at activities, then all of a sudden, I would understand all the English words to my favorite song.  This is how I experienced improving and progressing.

跟CREW交流时,曾经我习惯于先用汉语想好,再试图翻译成英语,但显然我不是个好的翻译,会出现很多词不达义的情况。现在的我觉的自己的思维模式发生了彻底的变化,我总是习惯性的直接用英语方式思考,虽然有时会因想不到一个确切的词而卡住,但我觉的这其实是一个质变的过程,用native speaker 的思维方式是学好外语的毕经之路。

Whenever I would talk to our Talk English Crew, I would use the same process in communicating with them, I'd first translate what I wanted to say from Chinese to English in my head then I'd say this translation in English.  I found out that I'm not a good translator and sometimes wouldn't be able to translate these thoughts correctly.  Now, I don't go through this process of translating and simply speak in English.  Even though sometimes I don't know how to express what I want to say completely in English, I can always find a way using the vocabulary I know to express my thoughts so that others understand.  For me, this is a big change in the way I approach learning the language.

加入Talk English之初,唯一目地只是学习英语,然而我这三个月收获的却不只是英语水平的提高。自信心的增加,对待事情的极积态度这些都是我刚开始不曾想到的收获。

在不同的活动渐渐的了解自己,也是我在Talk English的收获。

When I first joined Talk English, my only goal was to improve my English but in these 3 months what I've received is not just English improvement but an increase in self-confidence and a much more positive attitude and a greater understanding of myself through attending so many different activities.  This is the best thing that I've gotten out of Talk English.

Dear all,

很高興Vincent的分享,在成人的學習當中,最困難的部分就是要把學習留在自己身上,因為那是必須要自己的發現,從Vincent的分享當中,真的很替拓客家族的伙伴開心,因為我一直相信這Talk English的系統真的可以帶給所有的伙伴很多感動及收穫!Talk English會一直與你一起持續成長與進步!Always Making You Better!

I have been studied in Talk English for more than half a year and found that our group become bigger and more and more new faces appear and activities become richer. I always believe that good thing must be recognized and popular.

I began to love English by means of "speaking", which just like singing the songs for memorizing the lyrics easily. I think the importance for me is appreciating the ways of learning and happy atmosphere, which makes me addict in the happiness of learning English. After the class, the English words always haunted me when I was going to fall asleep, and sometimes I blurted out some English words, which surprised me. It made me back into the university times where the most craziest thing is to speak English when I had a dream at night. What a beautiful feeling!

It is a wise idea to annouce the disciplines of "Punishment" that punishing for those who speak Chinese and encouraging for those who speak English more in the class. In the past, others would help you translate the one that you connot speak in English, which is unfavorable for you to memorize this word or sentence and forget fast. Although it is difficult to express you want to say in using limited words, you can make efforts to use the words you are familiar with to express the new thing.I think the best approach to promote English is to memorize and use the words or sentence
effectively again and again. You also can do it!

For me, the best way is, firstly,  to free express myself without caring about grammer, sentence structure and accent. Secondly, to elaborate what you want to say gradually with new words and sentence. Finally, using English frequently can overcome the habit of listing a menu of described words. It is better than  reciting every words mechanically.
Talk English is such a school, which is also what I want. It is a wise choice for me to study here.

 Dear all,

Sexy Beijing

clock July 30, 2008 05:43 by author jim

A friend sent me this link to this video about an American woman in Beijing who made a TV series called Sexy Beijing.   It's very cute and well done.  Apparently it's won some awards and even been featured on CNN.  It's a take off the "Sex and the City" TV Series but done from a perspective of a foreign woman who is living in Beijing.

Anyways, take a look at this episode below:

A lot of you may be saying to yourselves... wow, her Chinese is REALLY good!  This reflects the same concepts that are presented in our ASCEND - AMS[心态整合] system but instead of using "learning English" as an example, this time it's "learning Chinese".  The hostess is someone who really is passionate about learning Chinese - she's really at the AMS Passion Level.  So passionate in fact that she wants to find a Chinese boyfriend (as seen in the above episode).  So you can see why her Chinese has improved to such a level - it's not her skill and ability... it's her Attitude & Mind-Set

It's exactly what we do here at Talk English when we're getting our members to really developing a genuine interest in learning English through our all our amazing activities and our AMS Workshops.

So as you can see, Sexy Beijing got some "Talk English" in herself as well...

学习英语 一路走来

英语是一个怎样的东西?对大多数人而言,这是一种语言工具。于我,它还像一个躲在
相框里的冰清玉洁的美人。
学好英语意味着什么?对大多数人而言,意味着更好的工作,更高的薪水。于我,却还
像通向美人那里的,一张粉丝见面会的门票。
我是如此欣赏能够流利与外国朋友交流的人,夸张一点说,像是仰慕天堂中的天使;
我又是如此享受说出口的英语能够被别人听懂的感觉,贴切一点说,是美好的心情。
是的,学好一门外语是自我价值的肯定,更是一种美好的心情。这,是我来参加Talk
English的主要原因。
还记得参加的第一次活动:墨西哥菜,辛辣醇香的口感仿佛还萦绕在舌尖。热情爽朗的
外教,主动积极的学员,热烈的活动气氛,打开了我对英语学习方式认识的一扇新门,
也让我很快就为之深深吸引,频繁的参与其中。
Pajamas Party,Rock Climbing,Language Exchange……一次次的活动伴随着我一步
步踏实的走来,有快乐,有开怀,有大快朵颐,有自信满足。这些都变成了深刻的记
忆。而收获,却在不经意中。
曾经也有过疑惑,在会员中看到过高中,甚或小学生的身影,但我个人并不认为Talk

Putting Your Words Into Motion

clock June 10, 2008 19:19 by author mark

You’ve picked topics for language that interest you … and now you have several new vocabulary words written down that you know will be useful.

How are you going to remember them well?

Here’s a technique I recommend, that will make your memorization fun and effective.  Take your list, bring it with you wherever you walk, and look for opportunities to say these words aloud as you find situations to use them in.

Putting this new vocabulary in use when you’re out in the world and “in motion” will raise the enjoyment level of learning, and when you enjoy, you’ll remember more easily.  If you can’t find a native English speaker to practice with when you’re out, then say the words to yourself to reinforce their pronunciation and meaning.  Visit places where you’ll have a good chance to use the vocabulary … for example, if your topic is fashion, then walk through a shopping mall and see or hold the clothing or jewelry as you say it’s name.  If it’s food, then stroll through the aisles of a grocery store, pointing to and picking up items, or take a shorter trip to your refrigerator (or clothes closet) and do the same.

With Putonghua, it’s the words and phrases I’ve learned while being in motion that I remember more than those I’ve simply studied at my desk in the apartment … so I’ve been putting this technique to the test myself!

Happy Dragon Boat Festival week to you, Mark

Mistakes Are Good!

clock May 30, 2008 10:02 by author mark

How can mistakes be good, when everyone tries hard to avoid them in life?

They’re one of the most valuable learning experiences!

I’d like to suggest that you be happy each time you make an error speaking English, because it means you’re not afraid to use the language.  Smile when you say something wrong, knowing you’re gaining more great information for the next conversation.  Let the error help you remember the correct way to speak the words next time.

If someone laughs, laugh with them.  It’s unnecessary to take the error personally … you know you’re intelligent and capable, so don’t worry about appearing less than that … and in the rare occasion that someone from an English-speaking country does laugh at what you say, know that they probably wish they could speak Putonghua and Shanghaihua as well as you!

Also, I’m not saying we want to repeat incorrect language patterns.  It’s our choice to seek a better way to express something, from a native English source, then remember the solution and practice it.

Through mistakes and the process of correcting them, we can celebrate the basic reason we learn another language …to communicate with and understand each other!  If you can achieve this as you correct your English, then you’re already successful.

Wish you well, Mark
